Dear Friends and Family,

hy-vee_finishing_pictureI am so very proud to inform you that I have the honor of racing in the New York City Triathlon for Tuesday’s Children on Sunday, July 8, 2012. Tuesday’s Children is a non-profit family service organization that has made a long term commitment to every individual impacted by the events of September 11, 2001 and more recently those who have been impacted by terrorist incidents worldwide. I would like to ask for you to sponsor me in this endeavor.

You may or may not know my father, Donald H. Gregory, was killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center. Unfortunately, I lived outside the northeast for the past ten years and have not been able to participate in this organization. Over the years, my mother has shared with me the activities and impact of Tuesday’s Children. This race is not only my first opportunity to be involved with Tuesday’s Children, but also to connect with the 9/11 community.

After receiving word that I had gained entry into the Triathlon, I started to read more about Tuesday’s Children. The knowledge that this organization has gone beyond the 9/11 community and reached out to those impacted by international terrorism, not only touched me, but has been a motivating force for me each time I swim, bike, and run. I was most impressed to learn about Project Common Bond. It is the most expansive and fastest growing of Tuesday’s Children’s young adult programs, as it unites 9/11 teens from the United States with others from countries like Argentina, Ireland, Israel, Palestine, Russia, Spain and Sri Lanka that have lost a family member to an act of terrorism.  Since 2008, Project Common Bond has touched the lives of 225 teenagers from 11 nations. It is such a comfort to me to know that those affected will have the ability and support to connect with those who can understand.Hy-vee_swim_picture

Tuesday’s Children has been selected as a Charity Partner in the New York City Triathlon 2012.  I will be one of the fifteen triathletes racing with Team Tuesday’s Children as part of this very special program.  Each member of the team is committed to raise at least $2,500 in support of the organization.  Any donation you could make on my behalf would be much appreciated.  The thousands of families, like mine, that comprise the 9/11 community continue to have a great need for Tuesday’s Children’s programs and services.  In 2011, Tuesday’s Children had record attendance at all family programs and first responder program registration more than doubled.  Forty-nine percent of family members are still under 18 years of age and need the community’s collective support.

For the past 10 years, Tuesday’s Children has offered thriving, life changing programs that positively impact the thousands of children who lost a parent on that tragic day.  They also provide services and resources for the heroic responders who gave so much of themselves in the aftermath of 9/11.   Programs include: Family Engagement, Mentoring, Helping Heals Community Service initiatives, Adult Programs, Project Common Bond, Counseling Services and the First Responder Alliance.

Over the next two months, I will be training for this Olympic distance triathlon which begins with a 1500 meter swim in the Hudson River, followed by a 40 kilometer bike ride up Manhattan’s Upper West Side, and finishes with a 10 kilometer run through Central Park. I’m proud to be racing for Tuesday’s Children but also to promote and fundraise for an organization that is so near and dear to my heart.

I invite you to not only help support my race, but please feel free to browse the Tuesday’s Children website to learn more about their life changing programs and services.

With heartfelt appreciation,

Amanda Gregory
