Mentoring

Tuesday's Children families have expressed a real need for supportive, positive adult role models for their children.  While no one can ever replace a parent, a mentor can be a strong and compassionate guiding presence in a young child’s life.  And our families know -- first-hand -- what a difference a mentoring relationship makes not just for the child, but for the whole family.

The mission of the Tuesday's Children Mentoring program is to build positive, caring relationships between adult Mentors and children between the ages of 6-16 who lost a parent/loved one on September 11th.  A Mentor can help a child develop strengths and coping skills; can introduce a child to new opportunities; can encourage a child to make healthy choices, and ultimately achieve his/her full potential.

Mentors and mentees engage in community-based activities, twice a month, for a minimum of one year.  These activities can include playing basketball in the backyard, working together on problem solving skills, attending sporting events, doing homework together, getting a slice of pizza and talking about books they’ve read, or volunteering in the community.

The Tuesday’s Children Mentoring program helps create long-standing friendships between mentors and mentees – relationships from which both the child and adult each draws enormous benefits.

Every Mentor who is accepted into the program must meet the highest of standards and is thoroughly screened by a committee at Tuesday’s Children.

Thoughts from a mother of a child in our mentoring program...

"I can tell you that this has been and will be a lasting and positive impact on my son, Brandon.  Dallan has not only enriched Brandon's life but has brought joy to mine.  Just knowing that he has a "Big Brother" who genuinely cares about him, and most of all is consistent with him, makes Tuesday's Children's Mentoring Program worthwhile.

Thoughts from Mentors...

"The most rewarding part of being a Tuesday's Children Mentor to me is when I think of the look on Devin's face the first time I showed up at his grammar school basketball game.  Devin's reaction made my commitment to being a Mentor totally worthwhile.  I never thought something as simple as attending his basketball game would be one of the most humbling and rewarding experience in my life."     - Jason M. (Mentor) NJ

"Becoming a Mentor to Meghan is one of the best experiences of my life. Everyone from her mom, her siblings, grandparents and super dog, Ginger, has welcomed me with open arms (and paws!).  It's a feeling I can hardly describe.    - Alison O. (Mentor) NJ
