Helping Heals - Charleston, South Carolina

Research indicates that by giving something back to the community, individuals take a significant step toward improving psychological mental health.

The NYU Institute for Trauma and Stress has said,

"Those who engage in volunteer work experience a significant improvement in emotional well-being, self esteem, self worth and self efficacy.  They develop a greater sense of purpose in life, achieve increased mastery over their lives, and improved life satisfaction."

Through our initiative entitled Helping Heals, Tuesday’s Children has instituted international, domestic and local community service programs for both teens and adults.

Tuesday's Children knows that Helping Heals

During the school break in February, 14 high school students gave up their vacation to help a family in need.  Tuesday's Children's Helping Heals program partnered with Habitat for Humanity in Charleston, South Carolina to help rebuild a home damaged by floods for a single mother with three children.  It was an amazing experience for the 9/11 teens who remember all too well how people helped them in their time of need.

"I think of my father when I do things like this.  He would be the first to volunteer to help a neighbor or someone in our community.  This makes me feel close to him.  I feel him with me.  I want to help others too." - 17 year old participant

As a reward for their hard work, historical sites and southern cuisine were included in the cultural experience.  A visit to the Magnolia Plantation complete with cotton fields and slave quarters was an interesting excursion followed by lunch of local Gullah cooking.
